Oh Land!

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Oh Land is my favorite musician of all time! Her music style is electric-pop. Her personal style is so unique, it’s hard to find a band that has a similar sound. The best I can think of that would fall in the same category would be Goldfrapp, Kylie Minogue, La Roux, Little Boots, and Róisín Murphy.

I won the Oh Land Top Fan Contest through Vevo to see her in concert and meet her after the concert! To win the contest you had to get points and the main way to get points was to share links to her music videos and the more people that clicked on the links and watched her music videos, the more points you got. Many thanks to all of my family and friends for clicking the links and watching her music videos! I hope you have become a fan of Oh Land too! She has been touring with OMD, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, as the opening band! OMD is great too!

Vevo gave us an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles, CA! It was so nice of them! We had a lot of fun there!

You can see her video “Sun Of A Gun” below, which has already gotten 8M+ views on Youtube!

The concert was at the Music Box in Los Angeles, CA.

I was able to get a photo press pass to get right in front of the stage! It was an honor and very surreal being this close to photograph my favorite musician! I met some other really cool photographers, including Debi Del Grande, with L.A. Record.

Oh Land painted her face with gold glitter for the concert! She calls it “possesed by disco.”

Oh Land is the stage name for Nanna Øland Fabricius. When you change her middle name Øland into English, it’s Oh Land! She hails from the great country of Denmark, famous for Hans Christian Andersen who wrote stories such as The Little Mermaid and The Emperor’s New Clothes!

Oh Land’s parents, Bent Fabric, pianist and composer and Camille Arndt, opera singer, are very talented musicians as well!

I wasn’t zooming in here!  This is actually how close I was with my 50mm lens! Oh Land crouched down a few times on the very edge of the stage!

The outfit Oh Land is wearing was designed by a friend of hers, Maj Anya of Ursidae New York and collaboration with infamous fashion designer, Carlo Alcantara! Here’s the detail of the back!

All of Oh Land’s songs are awesome, but my favorites would be Human, Sun Of A Gun, White Nights, Wolf and I, and Lean. I especially love the version of Lean with a string quartet!

I just love the colored lights they use as concerts!

Oh Land performs with balloons on stage and a projection system to project different images and videos onto the balloons which she triggers with a drum pad, a system she designed. Cool, huh?!

Oh Land puts on an amazing performance, full of energy, twirling, dancing and smiles! Here are some photos below where I tried to capture all of that!

After the concert, Oh Land’s touring manager, Farra, took us backstage to meet Oh Land! We actually got to talk (not just sign our CDs and leave)!

We found out that Oh Land is a cat person, even though she has a cute little dog named Ujan (pronounced oo-yawn; oo as in boo). She hasn’t had Chick-fil-A yet, only living in America for a short time. We told her she has to try it, and Sun Drop too! She is so nice and down to earth! We had a lot of fun talking with her! Her #1 place she wants to visit in America is actually Charleston, SC! Hopefully she’ll have a concert there! 🙂

Oh Land signed a cartoon I illustrated of her!

Oh Land is dancing in a field with an umbrella, surrounded by trees exploding out of the ground! I read an interview with MTV that she likes to imagine trees exploding out of the ground and I immediately thought of a movie by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, My Neighbor Totoro where the trees pop out of the ground and grow into a huge tree! Oh Land also used to dance around on stage with an umbrella! There’s a wolf under the moon to symbolize her song “Wolf and I.” The little houses on the hill are from her album cover with art by Eske Kath. I drew her little dog, Ujan also! He looks kind of like a mini Chewbacca from Star Wars! Ujan even signed it for our cats Ting Ting and Frankie! He, he! The leaf on Oh Land’s head is the same leaf on Totoro’s head in the movie. Oh Land hasn’t seen My Neighbor Totoro yet, however she has seen Spirited Away, a movie also by Hayao Miyazaki!

California!

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

I won the Oh Land #1 Fan Contest through Vevo to go see my favorite musician, Oh Land in concert and meet her after the concert! They gave us an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles, CA! It was so nice of them!

We stayed at the Andaz West Hollywood hotel in Hollywood, CA! It’s a very high class hotel and the staff are so nice and hospitable! I would highly recommend it! This is the view we woke up to in the morning with LA in the distant haze!

Marissa’s father, Doug, lives in California so we decided to visit him in our free time! We drove out to Santa Clarita, CA. On the way we saw some beautiful countryside! Since it’s still spring, everything hasn’t turned into a desert yet. He, he!

Marissa’s father is an expert remote control helicopter pilot! We went to a park where he has tests runs when he gets new helicopters and gear.

His remote control has more buttons than my camera! Craziness!

Doug was doing all sorts of aerobatic tricks!

This was one of the coolest tricks! He was hovering upside-down right over the grass!

After the helicopter tricks, we went downtown Hollywood, CA and saw the Chinese Theatre!

There was a giant mario, one of my favorite video game heroes. Sonic the Hedgehog is my all-time favorite though!

One of my favorite actors foot and hand prints, Johnny Depp.

We drove around and explored for a bit looking at the celebrity houses and found an overlook. I zoomed in and found the WB water tower and studios!

We went back to the hotel to get ready for the Oh Land concert and went up to the roof of the hotel that has a pool on top! You could see Los Angeles in the distance!

Snapsort: Find the perfect camera!

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

People are always asking us for camera advice, which camera is better than another and such. We are always looking for ways to help people out.

A website called Snapsort is an amazing website that compares cameras and allows you to research cameras in depth, both point-n-shoots/digicams and DSLRs. We think anyone can greatly benefit from this website, from beginners to pros! It has the detailed specifications pros are looking for and breaks down the technical jargon for beginners, or sometimes even for pros! He, he!

snapsort | www.snapsort.com | snapsort logo

Explore

There is an explore mode on Snapsort that allows you to specify certain criteria you are looking for such as price, image quality, and even true resolution. True resolution is great because manufactures list high megapixels to try and make the sell to the consumer, however Snapsort uses sensor specifications to give you a true resolution!

Compare

The camera vs camera comparisons are my favorite! They list reasons to consider ‘Camera A’ over ‘Camera B’ and vice versa. Not only does it give you the technical differences, it has descriptions or explanations of  the technical jargon. Snapsort gives a score at the end of the review to sum up the differences between the two cameras. It lists competitors as well so you can find similar cameras that might better fit you.

Just Tell Me

You can specify the most amount of money you want to spend on a camera and Snapsort will give you recommendations!

Top Digital Cameras

This will give you listings of cameras based on order of the best, the cheapest, the latest and many other categories for each brand name.

Other Helpful Tools

Snapsort could improve their site by making ‘Learn’ a main menu item at the top, however it is visible on the front page near the top. It is very useful for someone who wants to learn the technical jargon of cameras! It talks about everything from image stabilization, ISO, to RAW format.

In the top right corner of Snapsort.com you will find a search box where you can type in a camera you have or are interested in purchasing to find out so much information about it, from specs to the final score! Also when you are looking at a camera you can choose the ‘best prices’ option at the top of the page to give you price comparisons between different dealers such as Amazon.com, Best Buy, B&H Photo Video and more. This is very important so you can save a lot of money!

At the bottom of the site you will find a link to the blog (which they could improve by placing a link in the main menu in addition to the ‘learn’ section). In the blog you will find great tips and other useful information to further your photography and camera knowledge.

Hopefully Snapsort will soon add medium format digital cameras such as Hasselblad and Mamiya cameras! That would be a really awesome feature to compare those cameras against other DSLRs!

Lenshero.com | Lens Hero

Lens Hero

It’s also important once you pick that camera if it’s a DSLR, to find that perfect lens for your lifestyle or subject(s). Lens Hero is a sister site to Snapsort that provides information and comparisons for lenses from different manufacturers.

You can pick your camera so it will show only lenses that work with it, then break it down further by price and by style, zoom or suggest. The different styles vary from close-up, portrait, sports, landscape, low light and more.
